As we bid farewell to 2023, it’s time to rewind the clock and reminisce about the transformative year that the data world traversed. Most would probably agree that the most memorable development of the year was— you guessed it— artificial intelligence (AI). ChatGPT became a household name overnight along with several other AI apps like Jasper, DALL-E, and more.

New Innovation, New Risk

Amid the AI revolution, industry searches soared, with ChatGPT and Generative AI topping the charts, closely followed by concerns about Data Breaches and Cloud Data Security. However, with great technological strides come increased risks. In 2023, data breaches and leaks witnessed a staggering 17% year-over-year increase, serving as a stark reminder that no one is immune.

The financial toll of data breaches continues to climb, with the average cost reaching $4.45 million USD—a daunting 15% surge over the past three years. In response to this escalating threat landscape, BigID introduced the Security Posture dashboard, a revolutionary feature empowering users to identify, classify, and protect their data based on risk types.

There’s no shortage of acronyms in this industry— terms like PI, PII, NPI, and PHI, can make navigating the realm of sensitive data overly complex. We took a minute to simplify this alphabet soup in our most-read blog, “A Guide to Types of Sensitive Information,” which quickly became an essential resource in unraveling the intricacies of data sensitivity.

The regulatory landscape is in a nearly constant state of flux, with 162 new data regulations passed globally and seven introduced in the USA alone this year. Our most-downloaded content tackled the top emerging security technique DSPM, state-specific data privacy landscapes, and effective data governance for Conversational AI and LLMs.

No matter how much AI advances— there’s still no replacement for human connection and our most-attended events are certainly proof of that. BlackHat Happy Hour, RSA Women in Cybersecurity and DreamBig Customer Conference NYC, were especially memorable events for the BigID team because of the people we met there.
