Washington Journal: Trust and verify – How to protect your data from a massive Deep Root Analytics-type leak

Even if data is leaked or hacked, there are ways to limit the damage. Dimitri Sirota, CEO of the privacy management platform, BigID, said that tokenizing data can make data secure even if it is leaked.

Tokenization involves swapping out sensitive data for something in the same format that is non-sensitive. For example, instead of storing an actual credit card number, the number may instead be changed and stored as a token. Thus, if the data is stolen or leaked, it will be impossible to tell what the actual credit card number is.
