Where governance starts

Governance that reaches every data type, in your own business terms

Data governance has been built around people and process. It starts with the business glossary: stewards sample a database and map ambiguous column names to a pick list of approved business terms. That work carries as far as the stewards can reach, and it stops at structured data, which leaves files, email and code, where much of the data feeding AI sits, outside it. Lineage, quality and policy all inherit the accuracy and coverage of that mapping, so BigID moves it to AI. Every data type is mapped to your business terms, the catalog speaks the language of the business as well as the database, and the result is something analysts, assistants and agents can all use.

For data and governance leaders

Every data type in your business language. Business terms applied by AI across structured and unstructured data, so lineage, quality and policy start from complete, accurate definitions.

Where teams start with governance automation

How do ambiguous column names get mapped to approved business terms? AI classification reads the data, matches it to a glossary definition, and recommends a business term where none exists, so mapping runs at the pace of the data instead of the pace of a sampling exercise. AI glossary mapping → What about files, email, chat and code? Metadata extraction and glossary mapping cover structured, unstructured and semi-structured data, so the content AI depends on is cataloged and governed alongside the databases. Any data type → How large can the catalog grow? The core catalog scales to billions of objects, which puts everything in the enterprise in one place, with extraction that works across platforms and at scale. Scale and coverage → What does the catalog know beyond technical metadata? Sensitive findings, file labels and tags, access permissions and actual access history, age and freshness, inferred ownership, and duplicate or derivative copies, all attached to the object they describe. Catalog context → We already run a catalog and a glossary. Can BigID work with them? Every BigID finding can be pushed to Atlan, Collibra, Alation, Databricks or a proprietary catalog through Metadata Exchange, and existing glossaries and business terms can be brought into BigID. Hydrate your catalogs → How do business users find and use the right data? Through the data browser, AI search and subscriptions, or by asking Claude, Copilot or GPT, with BigID's security embedded so each person sees what their identity and role allow. Discovery and consumption → Can AI agents use catalog context without seeing everything? Agents reach BigID through an RBAC-controlled MCP, approved agents are recognized by identity, and each one is limited to the context data its role and stated intent call for. Context for agents → How do we decide which agents may use which context? BigID discovers agents natively, keeps an approved list, restricts different agents to different context data through permission controls, and checks requests against the intent defined in supporting context files. Agent controls → How is compliance kept current across regulations? Compliance is assessed automatically against hundreds of regulations, and new ones are added regularly, so the program tracks the rulebook without a manual mapping exercise. Automated compliance →

From raw data to a catalog that people and agents can use

Mapping data to your business terms is the step every other governance operation depends on, so BigID automates it first. Once every object carries an approved business term and its context, lineage, quality, compliance and AI access can all start from the same foundation.

Capacidades

Everything the business needs to know about its data, in its own terms and in one catalog

BigID finds the data, maps it to the business's own terms, and keeps the context that makes those terms useful. The same catalog then serves the platforms, people and agents that depend on it.

Build the governed catalog

Reach every data type, map it to your terms with AI, and keep the context around each object.

Govern any data, structured to unstructured

Metadata extraction works across platforms and at scale, so everything in the enterprise is cataloged, including the data AI depends on.

Explore data discovery and classification →
  • Unstructured data from files to email to chats to code
  • SaaS application data
  • Structured databases, warehouses and file formats such as Parquet
  • Data in motion, including Kafka and Kinesis
  • Specialized file formats, including binary and CAD
  • Technical metadata extracted from any platform, at scale
  • A core catalog that scales to billions of objects

A catalog with context beyond technical metadata

BigID stores metadata and the information around it, which gives analysts and AI agents the context to choose the right data and use it correctly.

  • Technical metadata from warehouses, SQL, Parquet and Avro
  • File labels, such as Microsoft and Google, and tags written into file metadata, harvested or written by BigID
  • Sensitive findings: pointers to IP, credentials, PII and PHI, with a secure way to review them
  • Operational metadata, including access permissions and actual access history
  • Age and freshness for retention and AI use cases
  • AI-generated inferences such as ownership, domain and provenance
  • Alternative data: duplicate and derivative copies
  • Enrichment of unstructured content for AI, including text chunking, vector embedding, and search

AI glossary mapping and enrichment

Mapping data to business terms is the foundation for every other governance operation. BigID does it with AI classification, across all data types, at the scale of the estate.

See how classification works →
  • Data mapped automatically to glossary definitions, with a recommended business term where none exists
  • Existing glossary terms brought in from another governance platform
  • Diverse glossary definitions pulled in from spreadsheets
  • AI that suggests and maintains the glossary based on how the data fits
  • An industry-specific ontology as the vocabulary
  • BigID AI that generates further inferred information, such as data ownership
  • Embedded AI assistants that help prioritize risks and recommend stewardship actions
Put the catalog to work

Share it with the platforms you run, open it to the people who need it, and give agents the context they should have.

Hydrate the catalogs and platforms you already run

BigID works alongside your governance stack. Every finding can be pushed to another catalog, and existing glossaries and business terms can be brought into BigID.

  • Every BigID finding pushed to the catalogs and governance platforms you use

FAQ

Answers on catalogs, glossaries, and safe access for AI

We have a catalog already. Where does BigID fit?

Underneath it, as the source of business terms and context. BigID pushes every finding to Atlan, Collibra, Alation, Databricks or a proprietary catalog through Metadata Exchange, and brings your existing glossaries and business terms in. Your catalog and your stewardship workflow stay where they are, with AI glossary mapping and full coverage feeding them.

Will it follow our glossary and our terms?

It starts from your vocabulary. BigID maps data to your glossary definitions, whether they come from another governance platform, a spreadsheet or an industry ontology. Where no term fits, it recommends a business term, and it suggests and maintains the glossary based on how the data fits.

How do business users and AI assistants use the catalog safely?

Through the identity they run under. Claude, Copilot and GPT reach BigID over an RBAC-controlled MCP, so each person sees what their role allows. Approved agents are recognized natively, limited to the context data their roles call for, and held to the intent defined in their context files.

What is data governance automation?

It replaces manual stewardship with AI that does the repetitive work. BigID extracts metadata from structured, unstructured, and AI data, maps it to your business glossary, keeps context such as sensitivity, access, and ownership in one data catalog, and assesses compliance automatically, so stewards review exceptions instead of mapping columns by hand. It builds on descoberta e classificação de dados and reaches files, email, and chat through unstructured data management.

How does data governance automation prepare our data for AI?

Assistants and agents work from data that is classified, mapped to business terms, and governed by identity. BigID gives them catalog context through an RBAC-controlled MCP, limited by identity, role, and approved intent, and the same classified inventory supports Governança de IA e prontidão do assistente de IA.

Which teams use BigID for data governance?

Everyone involved in governance works in the same catalog. BigID includes ready-made experiences for data stewards, line of business leaders, AI and ML teams, privacy officers, and compliance and legal teams, so governance does not split into a separate tool for each role. Gartner pointed to this breadth of persona support in its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Data and Analytics Governance Platforms, and it is part of why the same catalog serves privacidade e Governança de IA teams as well as stewards.
